What to do after the nationality oath?

By Luis Alberto Álvarez Moreno, Notary of Barcelona and partner at JLA Notarios.

At JLA Notarios, Notary in Barcelona, we are experts in the granting of nationality oaths and, after hundreds of them, a conversation that is repeated with clients is the following:

“Congratulations on having taken the nationality oath, you are now Spanish!

Thank you very much, after waiting so long for my nationality to be granted… but,
what do I have to do now?”

That is why today we will see what to do after the Spanish nationality oath in our Notary office in Barcelona.

After the nationality oath, what comes next?

Well, in this article we want to resolve this doubt for all those people who are going to take or have already taken the nationality oath. You can learn more about the oaths and why they are done at a notary here:

So, let's return to our initial question, What to do after the Spanish nationality oath?

I. Manage the registration in the civil registry

The first thing to do, once the oath has been taken, is to process the registration of nationality in the Civil Registry, as a preliminary step to obtaining the Spanish birth certificate. This is done by submitting a copy of the oath deed to the Civil Registry, but who submits it? This procedure can be carried out by the interested party themselves, but it is usually done by the notary's office, as we can submit a copy electronically, which saves time and effort for our clients.

Once the submission has been made, the Civil Registry will review the deed and proceed to register it.

After this, what comes next after the oath of nationality and the registration in the Civil Registry?

II. Civil registration certificate

Once the application has been submitted to the Registry, you must wait for the Registry to issue the birth certificate as a Spanish citizen. This certificate will be sent to the email address provided in the deed, and you will receive it in PDF format.

This certificate will include your personal details, name, surnames, place and date of birth, parents' names, etc. But it is important to keep two things in mind:

  1. Sometimes the email may end up in your SPAM folder. Check it from time to time.
  2. The registration is not automatic; it usually takes between one and three months, depending on the workload of the Civil Registry.

III. How long does the DNI take after the oath? And the Passport?

Once you have the certificate, you will be able to obtain your Spanish DNI and passport. But there are more procedures and formalities to carry out after swearing the Spanish nationality and obtaining these documents.

The first thing you must do is book an appointment through the police website, being able to choose the police station, day and time you prefer. On the indicated day, you must appear in person with the following documents:

  1. Literal birth certificate issued by the Civil Registry, which you must print and present.
  2. Two passport-sized photographs (32×26), one for each document, with a plain white background.
  3. Certificate of registration (empadronamiento) from the Town Hall where you reside. Please note that this certificate cannot be older than three months from the date of the DNI application.
  4. Pay the fee, €12 for the DNI and €30 for the passport. Payment can be made in cash or by card at the police station when they issue the DNI and passport, or also via online when you book the appointment.
  5. In cases of obtaining nationality, you must present the Foreigner Identification Card (TIE) or the Registration Certificate of a Union Citizen, showing the foreigner identification number (NIE).

If the person obtaining the DNI and passport is under 14 years old or is a person with judicially complemented capacity, this procedure must be carried out in the presence of the parents, the guardian, or, failing that, the person authorised by the latter. If you are not familiar with the procedure for Swearing Nationality for Minors, we offer you the following reading:

After this and after the nationality oath, what else needs to be done?

IV. Certificate of conformity

As your DNI will have a different number from the NIE, at the Police you must request a certificate of concordance between the NIE and the DNI. With this document, you will be able to prove that it is the same person who had an NIE and later a DNI. With this certificate and your new DNI, you will be able to request the change of your details at the Tax Office, Social Security, employment contract, Banks where you have current accounts, CAP (Primary Care Centre) and DGT (Traffic Department). For those wondering "what needs to be done after the oath", this is the final step.

Keep in mind that some of these procedures can be carried out more conveniently and without travelling if you have an electronic certificate associated with the new DNI. However, for this, you will first need to have obtained this electronic certificate.
